Bamboo & Coconut necklace
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A NECKLACE MADE OUT OF GRASS?
If you've ever worn a bamboo necklace then the answer is yes. Believe it or not, bamboo is classified as a grass, rather than a wood. Bamboo is most prevalent in Southeast Asia and neighboring regions, but you'll also find plenty in Hawaii. Most bamboo in Hawaii has been introduced. There two species, however, that are said to date back to ancient voyaging and exploring time of the Polynesian when Hawaii was first settled.
Most of the others were imported by immigrant families from Asia.
Explore the islands and you'll discover, in addition to large bamboo plantations, many isolated pockets where it thrives, in such out-of-the-way spots as inaccessible steep gulches and valleys. The explanation; Sugar plantations often cleared land for planting by bulldozing the plant debris into these gulches where today many can be found undisturbed,
Hawaii is ideally suited for bamboo because the various microclimates can accommodate a large variety of the beloved stalks. "Clumpers" as well as "runners” can thrive in the continuous growing season. The continuous growing season also would add to a yield per acre that cannot be matched anywhere on mainland USA. Also, the soil acidity found in Hawaii is less of a problem for bamboo than for other crops that would require heavy application of chemicals to adjust the pH.
The island lifestyle has always seemed to go hand in hand with bamboo. From flooring and furniture to fences, many elements of a Hawaiian home can be conjured from this versatile and aesthetically pleasing fiber. In addition to the obvious advantages of bamboo, there are other reasons why bamboo is the perfect kind of material. It's cost effective, versatile, and is easily harvested with a growth cycle of three to five years, rather than 10 to 50 for most softwoods and hardwoods. In addition, it's "green" – bamboo does not require deforestation.
Future-sighted builders have long touted the advantages of building with bamboo, and others have started to listen. For the last several years, the Maui County building department has been issuing dwelling permits for houses in which major structural components are made from bamboo. You've heard the adage about people in glass houses -- what about people in grass houses?
With all this going for it, bamboo seems to be the wave of the future, at least in the Islands. When you think about it, Confucius made a lot of sense when he said, "Man can live without meat, but will die without bamboo."
Meanwhile, wearing a bamboo necklace just may strike up a conversation about keeping our earth home “green”! As the locals say in Hawaii “talk story”.
